Suitcases donated to charities for use by the needy

DEAR SOLAR SPOTLIGHTS: I know you’ve touched on this before, but I didn’t need the information in the past, so I didn’t keep it.

I am looking for organizations that want suitcases for foster children. I have three suitcases — one large, one medium, and one small on wheels to donate to a group that could use them to help someone (it doesn’t have to be children) in need. If you could use any or all of these cases, please contact me in Lewiston at [email protected] or at 689-4394. Sun Spots, thank you for all the help you provide to people in our area. — Unnamed, Lewiston

TO RESPOND: I have a few calls to organizations involved in foster care. Readers, if in the past you have donated luggage to a non-profit organization supporting foster children, please let me know about the experience.

In the meantime, I can also suggest you contact Spurwink at 1-888-889-3903.

An Angel’s Wing Inc. at 1567 Lisbon St. in Lewiston at 241-0624. An Angel’s Wing Inc. actively raises awareness and provides funds to help people with substance use disorders and their families.

Another nonprofit is Kaydenz Kitchen Food Pantry at 155 Lisbon St., also in Lewiston at 577-7942. The thrift store supports the food pantry which meets the food needs of the community.

Safe Voices in Auburn is a non-profit organization that helps people who are victims of domestic violence. The organization is the sole provider of support services for victims of domestic violence in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. Call 795-6744.

Catholic Charities in Portland is another option as they help immigrant families settle here in Maine. The number is 781-8550. Ask to speak to someone in the development office.

DEAR SOLAR PLACES: Do you know where we could throw old pine logs from a tree we felled a few years ago? The logs are short but too large in diameter to fit into the public works area for branches. Burning them on our property is not an option. — No name, no city

TO RESPOND: I put this in Sun Spots Land to see if anyone could use this wood for outdoor campfires. It sat there for a while, but it could still be useful that way. If so, send me your details and I will put you in touch. Of course, if you have any ideas of where it can be transported in the area, let me know.

You can also rent a wood chipper and use the chips around your yard and garden.

Another idea is to call a local landscaping company to ask if they will remove these logs. I know The Dump Guys will take it off between $75 and $200 depending on how much wood there is. The number is 450-5858 and they are fantastic. I have used their services several times.

O’ Brien Property Services is another choice. The number is 615-6584.
